Baewha Final Assignment #3: Individual Commencement Speech

Due: Friday, January 27, 2012 (Last Day!)

Congratulations! The KCC English courses conclude the day this assignment is due.

You have learned many new things about English as well as personal and public speaking. You have all worked hard, grown, matured and changed as a result of your courses and other learning experiences in and out of class in Hawaii.

Your final assignment is to compose and deliver a 2-3-minute commencement speech. similar to one delivered to a graduating class from a high school, college or university.

Here are some recommendations that will help you compose and deliver a successful commencement speech.

First, decide on what topics you will focus on.

Your speech should include an introduction, body sections with two or three major concepts, and a conclusion.

Think about your audience and what they might expect from a commencement speech.

Also, decide on the tone of your speech. Perhaps you will speak humorously, warm and conversational, or instead you will use a serious, calm, constrained voice  -or a combination of both tones.

Feature short stories about your experiences, anecdotes, quotations and other supporting materials, too.

For some guidelines on how to compose and deliver a commencement speech go to:

Compose your speech, and be sure to check it for correct English spelling, grammar and punctuation. Read your speech to be sure you stay within the 2-3-minute time limit.

Also, read your speech for appropriate pronunciation, intonation and delivery. Be sure to rehearse your speech using suitable hand gestures, body language and your general appearance. Then rehearse, rehearse and rehearse!
