For centuries travelers have been recording their journeys through the written word. These were recorded in diaries and journals by people on a trip somewhere, recording their observations. Travel journals are often written in a narrative format, recording events and dates. This became a favorite genre in American newspapers in the 19th century, for example.
Traditionally, travelers took notebooks on their journeys. They kept records of adventures and shared their impressions of the new, far flung places they visited.
That was then: this is now!
With the advent of laptop computers, iPhones, iPads, social networking sites such as Facebook and digital cameras travel literature has taken on new, exciting forms. Instead of waiting for travelogues to be published in print form travel bloggers can instantly post their comments via the Internet. They can include high-resolution digital photographs, and even include digital video -all of this to global audiences transcending time zones and geographic boundaries. They entertain, inform, persuade and inspire people around the world to share in the travel experience as never before.
How does this all fit with the tourism and hospitality industry? Check out these comments by a travel blogger named Caz Makepeace. Also, click this link to see how travel bloggers are a new, different breed of media.
Since you are from Korea I'd like to introduce you to The Korea Blog List. These are blogs in English language. There are many to choose from!
One of my favorite travel blogs is Explore Life Lah! Travelling the world to reach the destinations of a universe within. Darren Ng is a friend and a native of Singapore. Today he is one of that country's most popular and sought-after bloggers. As Darren says:
Welcome Explorers! Hi! Thanks for visiting this travel blog. The site documents my overseas explorations and I hope that the information shared can help you in making your travel plans. Bon Voyage!
Take a look at this unique backpackers hostel in downtown Singapore, the Five Stones Hostel. trust me, this is not your average youth hostel!
Darren and his family also went on a Liberty of the Seas Cruise to Florence, Italy. Check that out here.
What's my point? All of you are beginning your studies at a time when the Internet is having a huge impact on life and business around the world. That especially includes the travel and tourism industry, acknowledged as the largest sector of the world economy. Those in the business of travel and tourism see bloggers as marketing tools -but also as resources for staying competitive.
