SYLLABUS: FALL 2011
OVERVIEW AND DESCRIPTION
Welcome and Aloha! This facilitated course focuses on the major elements of business communication for tertiary-level school administrators. It is designed to provide participants with maximum opportunities to develop professional communication skills for application in the workplace. Participation in individual, paired situations and group activities are emphasized for implementation in professional settings.
CLASS SESSIONS
August 25, 2011 – December 8, 2011. Thursdays -except Wednesday, September 7.
Classroom: Manono, Room 110. 9:00 a.m.-10:30 p.m., unless other specified.

By the conclusion of this course participants will:

PARTICIPATION
Come prepared to actively and enthusiastically participate in individual, paired and group activities.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE USAGE REQUIREMENT
All class and personal discussions during class time shall be in English. Throughout this course I will be coaching you and correcting you on your English pronunciation of words and phrases, as well as your writing skills. Encountering difficulties? Seek my assistance.
MOBILE PHONE AND LAPTOP COMPUTER POLICY
Turn off cell phones during class time. Turn your phone on after class is dismissed. Participants are encouraged to bring laptop computers. You must be connected to the KCC system; please go to the library for assistance.

EVALUATION AND FEEDBACK
Your written and verbal grammar, pronunciation, nonverbal communication, time limits, enthusiasm, organization and substantive details will be most important. I will be providing you with immediate verbal feedback in class. Feedback reports will be sent to your e-mail box with some comments and suggestions for improvement. An overall report on your performance will be sent to you and entered into your ePortfolio at the conclusion of our four-month course. Remember: I am in the business of helping you succeed!
FACULTY BIOGRAPHY
Born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut near New York City, I earned my B.A. degree in Communications (Business) from Pace University in New York, and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) with a concentration in Social Studies, curriculum development and methodology, gifted and talented learning from Manhattanville College, New York. For over 25 years I’ve taught traditional and online-based classes. I am president of a non-profit association of history educators, a published author and speaker. I am an adjunct lecturer in speech communications at Hawaii Tokai International College. I sit on the boards of various civic organizations. In my free time I enjoy reading, gardening, exercising, traveling, hiking, listening to music, podcasts and online radio.
