SPRING 2013 SYLLABUS

OVERVIEW AND DESCRIPTION
Aloha! English Class B is an English-immersion course of twelve (12) classroom sessions and additional field trips, cultural activities and a final presentation for a total of thirty-six (36) class hours. Our sessions will focus on business communication, commerce, cultural tourism and the hospitality industry, as well as an overview of the major elements of American English public speaking.

Duration: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 – Friday, March 8, 2013. 
Classroom: VARIES. Please consult your written schedule.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
For a passing evaluation students must be able to fulfill the following learning outcomes:

-Develop an understanding of the various core concepts of speeches and presentation styles. (Critical Thinking, Effective Oral Communication, Second-language Proficiency)

-Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal speaking skills. (Effective Oral Communication, Second-language Proficiency)

-Develop and demonstrate increased self-confidence in communication situations. (Critical Thinking, Effective Oral Communication, Second-language Proficiency)

-Demonstrate interest and comprehension through active participation in class activities. (Critical Thinking, Effective Oral Communication, Second-language Proficiency)

-Demonstrate familiarity with key elements of the Hawaii tourism and hospitality industry. (Critical Thinking, Effective Oral Communication, Second-language Proficiency)

PARTICIPATION
Come prepared to actively and enthusiastically participate in individual and team activities. Examples include expressing opinions, topic discussion and presentations of course topics. Minimal participation means that you will receive a lower grade. Speak up! Don't be shy! Be heard! Have fun!

GRADING
A= 90-100%; B= 80-89%; C= 70-79%; D= 60-69%; F= 0-59%. 


ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS AND DEADLINES
This will be provided to you on a separate document and online on an instructional blog:
TESLTeachersRuleMyWorld.Blogspot.com/  Submit your assignments on time. Grammar, pronunciation, nonverbal communication, time limits, enthusiasm, structure and substantive details will be most important. 

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES AND METHODS
Online-based readings, lectures, web links, discussion and presentations will be used. Time in class will be budgeted for short lectures, practice and project-based assignments, enabling you to effectively use what you have learned in this course, professional settings and personal life.

ACADEMIC TEAMS
Some assignments are team-project-based. Team members must contribute equally to the development and delivery of projects. Effective teams consist of three (3) to four (4) members. Working in academic teams may be a new experience. I am here to coach and assist your team. Contact me with your questions. I am here to help you succeed!  

ATTENDANCE AND LATE-ARRIVALS
Attendance is required. You must arrive on time. Contact me at JeffreyBinghamMead@gmail.com if you miss a class. If you miss four or more class sessions your overall grade will be reduced. Students arriving late will have their total participation grade reduced.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT
All class discussions shall be in English. Throughout this course I will be coaching you and correcting you on your English pronunciation of words and phrases. 

ACADEMIC HONESTY
Plagiarism is representing the words and ideas of others as your own without proper citation. This is strictly prohibited. A plagiarized assignment will receive a zero-grade and reported to the Program Coordinator for further action.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY
Turn off your smartphones during class time. No texting is permitted during class sessions.

FACULTY BIOGRAPHY
Born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut near New York City, I earned my B.A. degree in Communications (Business) from Pace University in New York, and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) with a concentration in Social Studies, curriculum development and methodology, gifted and talented learning from Manhattanville College, New York. 

For over 30 years I’ve taught traditional and online-based classes. I am president of a non-profit association of history educators, a published author, speaker, business owner and an adjunct lecturer at KCC since July 2011. I am also a professional tax-preparer with a Honolulu-based accounting business. I am a member of various Hawaii and U.S. mainland civic organizations. In my free time I enjoy reading,  exercising, traveling, hiking, listening to music, podcasts and online radio. Yes, I am on Facebook at Jeffrey Bingham Mead. You can contact me there, too!
