Annyong Haseyo! Aloha! Welcome!
Today, on January 17, 2013 students from Shinheung College, South Korea will begin a three-week long stay in Hawaii, America's 50th state. While here you will be studying, practicing and improving your English language skills at Kapiolani Community College.
I will be your instructor for the Intensive English Personal and Public Speaking class. Our fun and our work starts now!
Today you will be participating in an evaluation assessment. I've posted that assessment on this blog-site, as well as your class syllabus.
The ability to write, think and speak English well will be valuable to your future. In the time we will have together you will be learning how to communicate more effectively and confidently.
What you get out of this course will depend on what and how much you put into it. A class that requires you to deliver assignments in a second language is no small task for college students anywhere. Always remember you are not the first to make it through the rigors of a course like this one.
We will be focusing on English and successful communication through personal and public speaking. Effective communication is vital to the success of individuals, organizations, governments and businesses worldwide. This course is intended to help you improve your English language skills.
Your active participation is crucial to your success. That includes verbally participating in class activities and discussions, as well as practicing your English speaking, pronunciation, intonation skills and so on.
Some assignments require you to work in academic teams. Most assignments are tailored for individuals and pairs. One assignment is a class project due on your final day before you return to Korea.
Get to know your academic teammates. Take the time to create a good support network with them. Share ideas, experiences and your talents. Together, everyone grows and succeeds!
Kapiolani Community College offers many opportunities for socializing on and off campus. The best achievers in this course are the ones who proactively use and practice their communication skills in and out of class. You will have many opportunities to make new friends!
I wanted to express my willingness to listen to your concerns and your imaginative ideas. Part of my job is to help you build a solid foundation of learning for future success. This is so that you can apply what you learn here to other courses, your life in Korea, and to your future careers.
I can be contacted by e-mail anytime. I take Sundays off but my policy is to respond to your messages within 12 hours the rest of the week. Don't forget: I am on Facebook!
Cheers and aloha,
Jeffrey Bingham Mead
