Reminiscing: Summer 2011 South Korean Teachers at Mission Houses Museum

This past summer I had the pleasure of working with an outstanding group from South Korea. Comprised of teachers from all over the country, these hardworking educators were here for three weeks. They were in Hawaii to learn how English is taught in English to ESL students.

To many of us that sounds familiar, right? The South Korean government has mandated that English courses be taught only in English -the goal, so I am told, is to build a solidly bilingual society in less that 20 years. Pretty ambitious!

The photo was sent my Olive, one of the teacher participants. We went on a field trip to Honolulu's Mission Houses Museum. We met with staff and went on the tour. The group learned how educators can partner with museum organizations such as the Mission Houses Museum Association and liven student learning experiences, while also strengthening their English language skills. It was a wonderful time!
